Riff, Groove, Fill grew out of an idea for my group, Chez Vees, to have in its repertoire the sort of piece we could use at residencies. It was a way for us to work with musicians that we may have had no previous acquaintance with and still be able to converse in a workshop format about certain musical conventions and their implications.
